About us

We are Rewilding Affric Highlands

Working together for a landscape where people, nature and livelihoods support one another to thrive.

Affric Highlands is the UK’s largest rewilding landscape, stretching across more than 81,000 hectares of the Scottish Highlands. It was established in September 2021 as the ninth member of Rewilding Europe’s network of large, iconic rewilding areas, building on three years of work under Trees for Life’s pioneering East–West Wild project.

Since 2025, the initiative is managed by our independent charity, Rewilding Affric Highlands, with ongoing support and guidance from Trees for Life and Rewilding Europe.

Today, the Affric Highlands partnership brings together 21 landowners, working collaboratively to reconnect habitats, restore nature, and create a thriving landscape where wildlife, communities, and livelihoods can flourish together.

Our mission

We’re bringing together communities, landowners and businesses in a shared mission to restore habitats across more than 200,000 hectares of the central Highlands. Our goal is a resilient, regenerating landscape – rich in biodiversity and opportunity – where people, nature, and livelihoods support one another to thrive.

Rewilding Europe – an innovative idea and a strong network

Affric Highlands is part of Rewilding Europe’s rewilding network, which aims to implement the concept of rewilding throughout Europe. Rewilding Europe was founded in the Netherlands in 2011.

Rewilding Europe has set itself the goal of securing at least 1 million hectares of land for rewilding in ten areas across Europe. There are already rewilding areas in PortugalSweden, Bulgaria, Italy, Croatia, Spain and Romania as well as the cross-border Danube Delta area shared by Romania, Moldova and Ukraine and the cross-border Oder Delta area shared by Poland and Germany. Affric Highlands became the ninth rewilding area in 2021.
